The Dirty Truth About That Other Jersey Shore
NPR producer Art Silverman uncovers New Jersey's filthy situation: the Passaic River. U.S. manufacturing was jump-started along its banks. Now the river is so toxic, part of it is a superfund site, and much of the rest is, as one writer puts it, "a toilet." - November 19, 2010 at 13:11 PM
Dancing Machine Parts Reanimated in Swedish Nuke Plant
You can't make this stuff up. MAKE Magazine recently featured a video from Opera Mecatronica, on display at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. The exhibition room is underground, in what was Sweden's first nuclear reactor, built in the 1950s for scientific research and decommissioned in the 1970s. A 3-meter-tall marionette there, named Olimpia, is made from old machine parts and controlled by a computer. Oh, and it dances to an aria from "The Tales of Hoffman."
How to Fake It
We’re all works in progress… but you’ve got all of 1 day to look your best. Now’s not the time to stress. It’s time to fake it. I know, you’re working on your workout program, you’re doing your best to stick to a healthy diet, but sometimes you’re just not as diligently dedicated as you could be… That’s okay. Sometimes you just don’t have the time to get in tip top shape before having to strut yourself at important must-look-good outings like high school reunions, weddings, and Friday night. Sure, you are working on a workout routine, you’re in the midst of designing a diet that fits into your frenetic life, not to mention that you’ve now got just 20-minutes to shower, get dressed, and prettied for the “big” night! Faking your perfected figure just might be the jumpstart you need to finall... Read the full story on Planet Green - November 19, 2010 at 12:11 PM
iPhone App TrackYourHappiness Links Pleasant Daydreams to Low ..
Breathe. Be in the moment. Be the moment. It could sound like a lot of fluffy, non-sense to a yoga class goer who's new -- or ambivalent -- about the whole practice. That's why, as a yoga instructor I'm hesitant to mention such coined terms in class so much as I am quick to point the all the great science pointing out what us practitioners knew all along; the meditation-happiness factor. Here's the latest bit of science, as reported in the TIMES'<... Read the full story on Planet Green - November 19, 2010 at 10:11 AM
Soup of the Week: Vegetable, Beans and Pasta
This soup is about as simple as you can get, using ingredients readily available in your refrigerator and pantry. I had some particularly flavourful homemade chicken stock which really made all the difference in this comforting bowl. It would also be wonderful with a good strong vegetable stock. I started making this soup at 11:30 and it was ready to eat by noon. Of course, you can add other vegetables if you have them, but I liked the almost purity of flavours in this soup. I made a fairly large pot of it and it just got better the next day. If you like you can add a bit of grated Parmesan cheese over... USDA Releases the 2009 Household Food Security Stats: The Numb..
This week the USDA released its 2009 Household Food Security statistics. According to the report, 14.7 percent of American households were considered food insecure at least some of the time in 2009 and 5.7 percent were found food insecure often. These numbers are unchanged when compared to last year which showed the highest percentage ever since the report was first released in 1995. Billy Shore, executive director of Share Our Strength, a nonprofit devoted to ending childhood hunger had this to say:
The new food insecurity figures portray a dire situation in which a record level of children in America, more than 17 million, struggle with hunger. These children need access to nutri... Read the full story on Planet Green - November 19, 2010 at 06:11 AM
10 Closet Worthy Picks That Don't Look Recycled But Are
I am what might be referred to as a recycle-a-holic…I save everything, much to my family’s dismay, and end up driving all over town to locate the appropriate facility to recycle, re-use, compost or at least safely dispose of. Do the benefits outweigh the carbon footprint I’m creating? Honestly, I’m not sure and given the complexities surrounding a cost / benefit analysis of the "to recycle or not to recycle" question, it’ll take me a bit to find the truth. That said, dipping into the waste stream, using materials already in existence and giving them a second crack at life really lights my fire. I’m all about closing the loop & post-consumer recycled content. When it comes to goods made from recycled materials, I actually like, in most cases, to be able to identify what it was in its... Senate Fails to Pass BPA Ban on Children's Products
The Senate was set to consider a bipartisan deal to limit the use of BPA in children's products but as of yesterday the bill failed thanks to hard opposition from the American Chemistry Council and other lobbying efforts. The ban was proposed as an amendment to the food safety bill currently pending in the Senate. According to the Journal Sentinel, the amendment would ban use of BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups as well as requiring the FDA to issue a revised safety assessment for Read the full story on Planet Green - November 18, 2010 at 10:11 AM
Robot Cars Are on the Horizon!
There's two new Dean of Invention episodes premiering on Planet Green this Friday, November 19th at 10pm Eastern and 10:30pm Eastern; the first of them contains a segment that really intrigued me and made me think about some future transportation possibilities that might seem very science-fiction to us, but they could show up faster than expected. After all, it's very hard to predict the future. If you had asked someone 20 years ago if it would be possible to sort through billions and billions of documents in less than a second and find a very specific phrase or piece of data, and all that for free, would they have believed you? Yet most of us used Google and other search engines daily. Not so long ... Read the full story on Planet Green - November 18, 2010 at 08:11 AM

Study: Too Much Teen Texting = Risky Behavior Like Alcohol Abu..
If your teen text messages incessantly you may have more to worry about than just your cell phone bill. According to a study at Case Western Reserve University reported in the New York Times, high school students who spend the most time texting or on social networking Web sites (or both) are at risk for other risky behaviors like smoking, risky sex, depression, eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and absenteeism. The study posed a variety of questions to 4,000 students from 20 different urban high schools in Ohio. Twenty percent of students questioned sent more than 120 text messages a day and 10 percent were on social networking sites for more than three hours a day. And 4 perc... Store Your Vegetables in This Affordable DIY Root Cellar
At our house, we've been focusing more on growing food in our garden that will not only feed us during the growing season, but into the fall and winter as well. While we do some winter vegetable gardening under low tunnels, this generally means growing vegetables that will store well after you harvest them. These include:
- Apples
- Carrots
- Potatoes
- Jerusalem artichokes
- Beets
- Cabbage
- Parsnips
- Leeks
- Rutabaga
- Turnips
While many older homes were equipped with some type of root cellar, it's probably a good assumption that most people don't have one now. And while you could put in a bit of time and effort to Read the full story on Planet Green - November 18, 2010 at 06:11 AM
What Do The New TSA Naked Body Scans & Pat-Downs Have to Do Wi..
If you live in the United States and even sort of follow the news, or have just been to an airport in the past few weeks, you probably haven't been able to avoid all the brouhaha about the new options the Transportation Security Administration has given you before boarding your flight: Either get naked pictures taken of you or get publicly groped in rather intimate places. On a personal level I don't much mind some underpaid glorified security guard seeing a naked photo of me—though I admit it certainly seems that the heath jury's still out on whether or not I'm going to eventua... Sweet and Sour Braised Turnip Greens with Purple Carrots
Bitter greens like turnip greens can be just that, bitter and it takes some smart cooking methods to please the picky palette. My husband has turned his nose up at the taste of them before so I've learned how best to include them in our diet. Turnip greens are incredibly healthy and loaded with flavor if done correctly. Turnip greens are detoxifying to the body. According to WHFoods, they contain phytonutrients called glucosinolates that can help activate detoxification enzymes and regulate their activity. Every Saturday this month I've woken up at the crack of dawn to make sure I get my hands on t... Read the full story on Planet Green - November 17, 2010 at 12:11 PM
In Defense of The Family Dinner
Laurie David hit the nail on the head. “There is one thing I did right as a parent: cultivating the ritual of our family dinner since the children where young,” she said recently at a Climate One event in San Francisco, where she had been invited to discuss her new book The Family Dinner: Great Ways To Connect With Your Kids, One Meal At A Time. She made no bone about what a hard time she’s currently having with her two teenage daughters, Cazzie and Romy. “Everything you’ve ever heard about teenage kids is true, and beyond: it’s horrible!” she said with a laugh. “But they do c... Professor Mickey Huff Seeks Media Accountability with Project ..
I first came in contact with Mickey Huff, Associate Professor of History at Diablo Valley College, when one of my Planet Green articles was selected by Project Censored, for which he serves as director. What is Project Censored? Here's some of how Mickey Huff describes it:
Project Censored’s principle objective is training students in media literacy and First Amendment issues for the future advocacy and protection of free press rights in the United States. Project Censored has trained some 2,000 students in investigative research in the past three decades. Through a partnership of faculty, students, and the community, Project Censored c... How to Get Your Kids to Eat More Vegetables
I’ve met a few kids in my time who have never had more vegetables than a carrot stick and, if they had to guess what an artichoke is, would say it’s a karate move. But not my kids, of course. They eat their vegetables all the time. At least sometimes. I mean, they all go through phases of pickiness, but when it’s all said and done, they eat almost every vegetable there is. What’s my secret? Well, I have 10 of them… Log your food habits online, and you’re more likely to develop healthy eating habits. 1. Serve them raw. Seriously, have you ever eaten a raw pea? It’s heaven on earth. No need for butter. Kids eat them like candy. I put a plate of raw cut-up veggies on the dinner table every night—yes, carrot sticks, but also sweet red peppers, celery, fresh peas. Cauliflower... Smart Solutions for Flooding Lean on Low-Tech Ideas
When it comes to finding solutions for flooding in towns during rainy seasons, the answers can be as simple as making use of the strategies Mother Nature has already employed. Urban landscapes strip away elements of natural flood control, such as deep top soil and trees with their wide-spread root systems. But the town of Pickering in North Yorshire has finally acknowledged how important these pieces of the puzzle are when trying to deal with annual flooding. The town is planting more trees and increasing soil absorption as a cheaper, more practical, and more sustainable solution to concrete and steel structures for protecting towns against floodwater. Here, BBC explains the strategy:

Creamy Vegan Pumpkin Soup
Allergies have been a killer the past couple months in South Carolina. I guess that's what you get when you live in a place where short sleeves are worn into October. It was recommended to me that I give up dairy in order to soften the punch of my allergies because dairy is known for producing mucus in the body. So for the most part, I try and stay away from dairy during the week, though I'll cheat a bit on the weekends. And it actually seems to be working quite dramatically. So this year's pumpkin soup recipe is vegan. The recipe is smooth and creamy whether you're a vegan or not. I subbed in almond for soy milk because that's what I had on hand and my only complaint is that almond milk doesn't have near the protein of soy milk, so consider topping it off with some roasted Read the full story on Planet Green - November 16, 2010 at 08:11 AM

Knowledge is power. This is true in every facet of our lives, and gardening is no exception. The more we learn about how to grow healthy, delicious vegetables and herbs, the better gardeners we'll become. It doesn't always mean we'll be successful (pests, diseases, and weather can still plot against us!) but it does mean we can start avoiding many of those rookie mistakes we all make at some point. With that in mind, I'd like to present you with a crash course in vegetable gardening, courtesy of Planet Green and a few of my favorite garden blogs and websites. These links cover a variety of topics, from crop rotation and organic pest control to perennial vegetables and composting. There are tips for small-space gardeners, such as how to grow a variety of vegetable in containers. Learn how... Read the full story on Planet Green - November 16, 2010 at 06:11 AM
